Senior Planner - City of Scotts Valley, California
The City of Scotts Valley, with a population of 12,000 and a land area of 4.62 square miles, is nestled in the picturesque Santa Cruz Mountains just six miles northeast of Santa Cruz and yet only twenty miles from San Jose and Silicon Valley. Residents of this small but vibrant community enjoy a year-round climate that is typical of coastal mountain terrain with occasional cool, foggy mornings but generally mild summers and a typically warm, dry autumn.
The City of Scotts Valley has a $12.9 million general fund budget and $20 million operating budget citywide and 60 budgeted full-time employees within the departments of Administration (City Manager, City Attorney, and City Clerk), Administrative Services, Police, Community Development (Planning and Building), and Public Works, which includes a Parks and Recreation division. The City also operates its own wastewater treatment plant/recycled water facility.
Reporting to the Community Development Director, the Senior Planner is responsible for both current and advanced planning activities, including processing of complex development projects. The position provides guidance, mentoring and coaching to one Assistant Planner and serves as the acting Community Development Director in the absence of the Community Development Director.
The City desires a candidate possessing a calm and collaborative temperament who fully embraces serving their colleagues and all members of the Scotts Valley community with good will and a positive vibe. The Senior Planner should have a working knowledge of the California General Plan amendment process, and CEQA Guidelines and environmental review procedures. The ideal candidate should be experienced in reading and interpreting complex architectural and civil drawings, writing easily understood planning reports and making concise oral presentations to colleagues and at public meetings.
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in urban and regional planning, urban and environmental studies, architecture, or a related field. Qualified candidates must have a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the field of urban planning and community development.
The annual salary of $97,381 to $130,503 (DOQE).
