Public Works Director - City of Scotts Valley, California

The City of Scotts Valley 2023/24 Budget includes $28 million in operating expenditures and an ambitious $14.8 million in capital projects for a total budget of $43 million.  The City has allocated 69.5 full-time equivalent (FTE) staff positions. 

The City is seeking a veteran public works professional with high ethical standards to be its next Public Works Director.  Reporting to the City Manager, the Public Works Director oversees a field and office staff of 22.65 FTE positions as well as augmented professional service contractors. The City desires a candidate with experience in providing general management and long range planning for all activities of the Public Works Department, including the construction and maintenance of streets, storm drains, sewer conveyance and other public facilities. 

As a member of the Executive Team, the Public Works Director provides expert advice and assistance to the City Council and City Manager on complex public works and engineering issues; responds to staff and citizen inquiries; coordinates with the other City Department on all matters involving public works and civil engineering issues.

Education & Experience: Any combination of training and/or experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities such as graduation from an engineering school of recognized standing with major work in civil engineering and extensive experience in progressively responsible professional civil engineering work, some of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.  California professional engineer’s (civil) license is desirable but not required.  California driver’s license required.

The City of Scotts Valley is offering a competitive annual salary of $135,408 to 190,536 (DOQE) plus generous medical insurance, pension, and paid leave benefits.
