On the western edge of the Coachella Valley in central Riverside County, the City of Palm Springs (incorporated in 1938) lies within the ecological area known as the Colorado Desert.  The City is approximately 96 square miles with well-established neighborhoods, a vibrant downtown, and world-renown resorts.  Known as a destination for its quality of life, recreational and cultural venues, dry heat, numerous fun and exciting special events, as well as shopping, the City of Palm Springs has a permanent population of approximately 46,000 residents and enjoys visitors from nearby Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties as well as east coast “snow birds” seeking warm weather.  Visitors to the City comprise approximately 27,000 to 30,000 additional residents in the winter, and over 1 million tourists also stay in hotel and non-hotel accommodations annually.  The City of Palm Springs values the diversity of its people and neighborhoods celebrating a population that includes youth, active senior and LGBTQ+ communities. 

The City desires a Parks and Recreation Director who is a leader that embraces team work and accountability, serves as a mentor and coach of staff, supports the professional development and training of staff, brings fun to the job, and celebrates successes to foster excellence and achieve community goals.  With the recent appointment of a new City Manager and a strong focus of building an excellent team, the City is ushering in a new leadership style and organizational change that embodies and models a high performance and well-functioning organization and culture.  The ideal candidate is an individual that also embraces community interests, and proposes new ideas to improve operations, enhance programs, and deliver services.  The successful candidate will oversee both an aquatics center and two community centers, and oversee special events.  This position requires 5 years of progressively responsible experience as a manager and supervisor in parks and recreation or related field plus a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in recreation, public administration, business administration or similar area.  A Master’s degree and certification as a Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) is desired but not required.  

The City offers a competitive salary of $127,380 to $171,228 based on experience and qualifications, plus a competitive benefit health and retirement package.
