Finance Director - City of Monterey, California

The City of Monterey is a first-class community and one of California’s most historic cities.  Monterey is a leader in creating a sustainable community by striking a balance between tourists and residents. The City covers an area of approximately 8 square miles, has a resident population of approximately 28,500, and an average daily population of 70,000.  Monterey is a full-service Charter City operating under the council-manager form of government with an annual budget of approximately $145 Million (approx. $80 Million General Fund).  The City currently has approximately 430 full-time and regular part-time positions.

This leadership position represents a great opportunity for an “up-and-comer,” early-to-mid career manager, or seasoned professional to join a well-managed city. The successful candidate will enjoy challenge and professional growth in a city that encompasses a broad and unique complement of progressive public enterprises and partnerships. The ideal candidate has demonstrated experience with and enjoys training and mentoring staff, and recognizes the importance of talent management and succession planning. The Finance Department consists of 16 positions, provides a full range of financial services and serves as technical advisor to all other City departments.

Typical qualifications include graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field and eight years of progressively responsible experience in accounting and financial work, including at least three years of management or supervisory experience preferably in a municipal government. A master’s degree and/or CPA is desirable. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. The annual salary for the Finance Director is $186,984, and the City provides an excellent benefit package.
