District Counsel - Valley Water - Santa Clara County, California

Nestled on the southern shores of San Francisco Bay in northern California, Santa Clara County is the home of Silicon Valley, the technology center of the world. The area was first known as The Valley of the Heart’s Delight, because of its natural beauty, agriculture, and fruit orchards. With this agrarian heritage, the county today hosts thousands of technology companies including the headquarters of industry giants Apple, Cisco, Google, Netflix, and Tesla, among others. The Santa Clara Valley Water District (Valley Water) is the primary water resources agency for the county.

A seven-member Board of Directors governs Valley Water. The District Counsel reports directly to the Board and oversees approximately 11.5 FTEs in the District Counsel’s office (FY 2020-21 budget, $4.1 million) and the risk management ($2.5 million) and workers compensation ($865,000) units.

A minimum of eight years of recent experience in the active practice of law in the State of California, including at least five years of progressively responsible experience in public agency/ municipal law, and including two spent supervising management, professional, and paraprofessional staff, is required, although equivalent experience will be considered. Executive management experience, including advising elected officials and working in a political environment, is preferred. Knowledge of law and principles related to flood protection, water resource management, modern water law, and state and local water history is desirable. Must be a current member, in good standing, of the California State Bar Association. The annual salary range for this position is $313,372.80 - $340,371.20 DOQE. Comprehensive benefits.
