Deputy Town Manager - Town of Payson, Arizona

Surrounded on all sides by the spectacular Tonto National Forest, the Town of Payson, Arizona, sits at an elevation of just over 5,000 feet. Since the original Beeline Highway (SR 87) was completed in the late-1950s, residents of Phoenix and the Valley of the Sun have ritualized this 90-minute ascent from the desert floor, up through canyons, and to the ponderosa pine forest to seek relief from the summer heat. Known as the Heart of Arizona, Payson (pop. est. 16,093) sits about 2,000 feet below the Mogollon Rim near the Mazatzal Mountains. The FY 2020-2021 budget of $43 million (including $10 million water utility) supports 163 FTEs, 11 PTEs, and 40-60 seasonal employees.

Reporting directly to the Town Manager, the Deputy Town Manager of Administrative Services supervises Payson’s three administrative departments (finance, human resources, and IT) and the town library.  She or he leads high-level special projects and manages complex, sensitive municipal and community issues as assigned. The DTM may serve in the Town Manager’s absence.

A bachelor’s degree in public or business administration, accounting, finance, or a related field and four to six years of experience in accounting or budget development in a municipal setting are required. Five to seven years of demonstrated progressively responsible experience in municipal administration is strongly preferred, and demonstrated human resources knowledge is ideal. Other combinations of experience and education equivalent to the foregoing may be considered. Residency encouraged. The hiring range is $120,000 to $135,000 DOQE. Comprehensive benefits.
