County Counsel - Napa County, California

The County seeks a confident leader to provide legal advice, assistance, and representation on civil legal matters to the County, its departments, and special districts.  The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of land use and related legal matters, experience in and provide executive leadership regarding land use (including CEQA), civil litigation, employment law, and other municipal law matters and will have a commitment to and passionate about living in and serving Napa County.   

The most successful candidate will be a collaborative team player who can navigate effectively in a political environment and communicate and work successfully with the Board, the County Executive Officer, and the various departments.  The next County Counsel will be a calculated risk-taker with a history of successful litigation, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and will bring emotional intelligence, confidence, credibility, and the ability to handle all situations with tact and professionalism. 

The County seeks an innovative problem solver who is not afraid to question the status quo, serves as a partner to County leadership, including elected officials, and finds legal pathways to accomplish policy goals.   In addition, they will be responsive and value the needs of their clients and provide cost-effective and highly professional legal services.  The next County Counsel will also manage and oversee litigation expenses, the department’s budget, and take an active role in providing staff with professional growth opportunities, while aligning staff and operations with the larger vision of the Board of Supervisors and CEO.

Napa County’s current annual salary range for the County Counsel position is $245,597 to $298,165, and they offer a $5,000 hiring incentive bonus.  Placement within this salary range is dependent upon experience and qualifications.
