Community Services Director - City of San Marino, California

With expansive residential properties surrounded by beautiful gardens, wide streets, and well-maintained parkways, the City of San Marino (approx. pop. 13,000) is one of the most desirable communities in Los Angeles County to live. San Marino residents enjoy a quality of life supported by excellent public services, vast open space and cultural opportunities, varied recreational amenities, a local library, and outstanding school district.  Residents are well educated and successful, and include long time homeowners, young families, and second homes.  As a General Law city operating under a council-manager form of government, the 2019/20 budget included 135.94 authorized full-time equivalent employees (FTEs) within the 7 departments.  Updating the 2019/20 budget, the 2020/21 fiscal year budget is scheduled for City Council approval on June 26, 2020.  The City recently completed a Recreation Needs Assessment survey that establishes a new, very exciting framework for recreational programming that the new Director will be responsible for developing and implementing.  The Community Services Department is comprised of the Recreation and Library Divisions consisting of 11 full-time positions and approximately 18 part-time positions.

The City is seeking a collaborative, enthusiastic, experienced leader with a background in recreation services, an interest in overseeing library services, and skills in writing, grants, team building, management and supervision. The ideal candidate is a professional who enjoys a hard-working and fun-loving environment.  She/he must be able to successfully and credibly communicate with a wide variety of audiences to achieve goals, build relationships, and deliver services.  A typical background for the successful applicant would be a bachelor’s degree in recreation, public administration, or a related field, and at least five years of increasingly responsible experience in community services including three years of supervisory experience.  A master’s degree is highly desirable, as is prior experience with a community similar in demographics to San Marino.  The annual salary range is $123,792 to $164,808, and the City provides a competitive benefit package.

Filing deadline is August 19, 2020.
