Located adjacent to several major corridors for access to regional, national, and global markets, and notable the affordability of housing, community values, local business and large manufacturers, the City of South Gate (pop. 98,633) is an ideal location to live and work. The City of South Gate ranks as the 17th largest City in Los Angeles County and the 73rd largest City in California.
The City of South Gate has an operating budget of approximately $50 million with reserves of 20%, and total of 316 positions. With public safety as a priority, approximately 50% of the General Fund budget is allocated to the Police Department. Fire, paramedic and emergency response / preparation services are provided by the Los Angeles County Consolidated Fire District. The City is in the envious position of having a robust strategic capital plan with several significant projects over the next few years “that will be transformative to [residents] living experience in South Gate”. Local and regional projects of significance include a 30-acre park in open space along the Los Angeles River, traffic safety improvements, a satellite campus for East Los Angeles Community College, a new cultural center, and a metro-rail station, among other community enhancements.
The City Council desires a City Manager with integrity, vision, and passion for local government. The ideal candidate is honest, communicative, open and direct, a team player, humble, enthusiastic, creative, accessible, and responsive. The new City Manager should also be skilled in fiscal management and community relations, collaborative, and value fairness and inclusiveness. Candidates should be seasoned interdisciplinary professionals with executive level city management experience, knowledge, and skills serving in a comparable size community as City Manager, Assistant/Deputy City Manager or Department Head. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Administration, Urban Planning, Business Administration or a related field is required. A Master’s degree and bilingual skills are preferred. The current salary range for this position is up to $265,000 and an appointment will be made depending upon the qualifications of the selected candidate. The City offers a generous benefit package for medical and other allowances.
