Assistant Director of Engineering - City of Encinitas, California
The City of Encinitas, known for its striking natural beauty, recreational opportunities and free-spiritedness, is a young, progressive city with 61,515 residents, located approximately 25 miles north of San Diego on the Southern California coast. With approximately 260 full-time City and San Dieguito Water District employees, the City of Encinitas provides a full range of services to the residents of this 21 square mile community. The City’s total budget for FY 2022-23 is $105.6 million. The FY 2022-23 capital improvement fund budget is approximately $22.5 million, and the six-year capital program is approximately $111 million. The Engineering Department consists of 17 talented and skilled full-time employees, 2 contract staff and an intern, who are responsible for the comprehensive oversight of the City’s infrastructure projects, and transportation network. In addition to the administrative functions of the department, the Engineering Department is comprised of two divisions: Capital Projects and Traffic Engineering.
The City of Encinitas is seeking a collaborative and communicative manager, with experience working across departments to successfully move projects through design, right of way, environmental analysis, permitting and construction. The Assistant Director of Engineering is a new position in the department this year and will be key in assisting with the planning, organizing, managing, and providing oversight for multiple functions, work groups and service areas. The Assistant Director will manage program workplans, oversee staff development, monitor grant opportunities, ensure projects are being delivered efficiently and ensure staff are providing excellent customer service. The typical candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field plus seven years of increasingly responsible professional experience in civil engineering, including five years of professional supervisory or management responsibility experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. A Master’s degree in a related field is desirable. A Professional Engineering License with the State of California in Civil Engineering is required. The annual salary range is $113,784 to $176,517, and the City provides a competitive benefit package.
