The City of San Luis Obispo, home to 47,000 residents and nestled within a backdrop of rolling hills in heart of California’s majestic Central Coast, is a community that is committed to being a place where all people feel valued, respected, and that they belong. To focus on providing high-quality, responsive, respectful, and inclusive public services, communication, programs, and community engagement, the City has 10 distinct departments comprised of a full-time complement of 470 personnel and approximately 200 part-time staff.
SLO is seeking an Assistant City Manager for oversight of City operations in the four Community Services departments: Community Development, Parks and Recreation, Public Works, and Utilities. The Assistant City Manager serves as 1) the Chief Operating Officer of the Community Services Group, 2) a trusted advisor, right-hand person, and confidant of the City Manager, and 3) an assistant to relieve the City Manager of operational matters. The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic, collaborative, innovative, adaptable, knowledgeable, thoughtful, inclusive, and people-oriented leader, learner, facilitator, partner, interpreter, advocate, and coach that values DEI and has experience in and passion for municipal management. The typical background and experience for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of progressively responsible management experience in a supervisory capacity. Experience as a department director in a similarly complex public agency and a Master’s degree is preferred. The annual salary range is $192,868 to $241,072, and the City provides a competitive benefit package.
